While new energy vehicles (NEVs) from Chinese car brands are getting a huge foothold in global markets, especially here in the Philippines, American auto giant General Motors (GM) is slowly creeping into the fold by selling more than 100,000 plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) around the world in 2025. However, according to GM’s 2025 Climate-Related Disclosures Report, which outlines the company’s global vehicle sales by powertrain and region, GM did not sell any PHEV to customers in the United States.
GM reported 102,459 PHEV sales worldwide in 2025, which is a slight dip from the 104,232 PHEVs they sold in 2024 but still a big increase compared to the 17,518 units they sold in 2023. It’s bizarre to note that the PHEV sales in America of this American car company remained at zero for all three years listed in the report.
The report shows GM sold 2,444 hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) sales in the U.S. during 2025, probably representing the sales of the Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray, which is GM’s only traditional hybrid model available in the American market. The Corvette E-Ray uses a performance-focused hybrid system rather than the fuel-saving approach commonly associated with many electrified vehicles. For the 2027 model year, the hybrid Corvette Grand Sport X replaces the E-Ray in the lineup.
Meanwhile, the sales of GM’s zero-emission vehicle (ZEV), which are pure-electric or battery electric vehicles (BEVs) continue to grow with global sales of 1,108,545 ZEVs in 2025, up from 623,633 units in 2023. In the U.S., GM sold 169,887 ZEVs in 2025, which represents a significant increase from 75,883 units sold in 2023.
Despite the absence of PHEVs in its current U.S. lineup, GM has not abandoned the technology. The company previously confirmed plans to bring PHEVs back to North America as part of a broader electrification strategy. Chief Executive Officer Mary Barra stated that GM continues to evaluate hybrids and PHEVs as market conditions evolve.
GM’s future hybrid plans may include the next generation of their best-selling full-size pickup trucks, such as PHEV versions of the highly-popular Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra. However, the next-generation 2027 pickup trucks were recently unveiled without a PHEV version. GM’s electrification mix remains divided by region with several PHEV models available for buyers outside the U.S. while American customers are left waiting for the American car giant to sell them a PHEV.
