For decades, Garmin® has pioneered new GPS navigation, and wireless devices and applications that are designed for people who live an active lifestyle. Garmin’s Automotive OEM (original equipment manufacturer) business unveiled the latest upgraded navigation software, enhanced infotainment platforms, augmented reality technology, and the latest integrated cameras and wearable solutions at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2019 at the Las Vegas Convention Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Garmin Automotive OEM Managing Director Matt Munn expects the CES 2019 will help communicate their commitment to innovating navigation and infotainment to launch Garmin as a global OEM solution in 2020. One innovation is the hybrid navigation system that utilizes real-time, cloud-based destination search and routing plus on-board maps and routing when connectivity is unavailable to provide an uncompromised navigation guide. Other improvements include intelligent map labeling, a new intuitive route-shaping feature for custom routes, and Garmin’s RouteCast™ weather system for mile-by-mile route-specific forecasts.
Garmin showcased its scalable infotainment platform with digital instrument cluster that integrates with Garmin-designed wearable products for driver monitoring and vehicle telematics. The company announced a new OEM strategic relationship to integrate its wearable products with vehicles where a new Bluetooth® based digital key solution using Garmin wearables can unlock car doors. Garmin collaborator Tapkey hopes to give app developers, service providers, and lock manufacturers the ability to add digital key access to their product lines. They also showcased how its wearables can monitor driver stress and display the driver’s fitness information using the Garmin vívoactive® 3 GPS smartwatch.
The company likewise discussed recent developments to their integrated camera technology where Garmin is in the process of developing its third integrated DVR (Digital Video Recorder), which is designed to integrate with the head unit and other vehicle electronics. To date, Garmin has produced OEM camera DVRs that are installed in multiple vehicle programs with the PSA Group. They likewise announced plans of integrating camera products for a new auto OEM in 2020. To support electric vehicles (EV), Garmin also revealed its latest EV feature set.
To highlight some of its research and development work, Garmin will demonstrate its augmented reality technology advancements and multi-model navigation solutions, which can automatically provide routes using a combination of driving and mass transit to guide users to their destinations.
