The Philippines’ premier annual event for electric vehicle (EV) enthusiasts is back for its 12th edition. The Philippine Electric Vehicle Summit (PEVS) 2024 will be held from October 24 to 26 at the SMX Convention Center Manila, showcasing the latest in EV technologies, innovations, products, and accessories from major brands in the Philippines and across the region.
“The 12th PEVS aims to ignite a powerful call to action for a transformative shift in transportation and mobility,” said Edmund Araga, President of the Electric Vehicle Association of the Philippines (EVAP), an organization with a 17-year history of promoting EV adoption and organizing this annual summit.
“With the theme ‘Spark Change, Drive Electric,’ PEVS 2024 invites everyone to join the movement toward a cleaner, more sustainable future in transportation,” Araga added.
This year’s summit is particularly significant, coming two years after the enactment of the EV Industry Development Act (Republic Act No. 11697), also known as the EVIDA Law. This legislation led to the creation of the Comprehensive Roadmap for the EV Industry (CREVI), rolled out by the Department of Energy (DOE) in 2023, which serves as a guiding framework for EV stakeholders in the Philippines.
Inter-agency Collaboration
Several government agencies are contributing to the broader adoption of EVs. The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) is implementing the national Electric Vehicle Incentive Strategy (EVIS) to encourage businesses to switch to EVs. Meanwhile, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) and the Land Transportation Office (LTO) continue to work on modernizing public transportation systems.
President Ferdinand ‘Bongbong’ Marcos has shown consistent support for the EV industry. He recently mandated that government agencies should ensure EVs account for 10% of their fleet, doubling the minimum requirement of 5% outlined in the EVIDA Law. His administration is keen on accelerating EV adoption across both public and private sectors through various initiatives and incentives.
The EV market in the Philippines saw a notable increase in 2023, with EV sales reaching 10,602 units, a significant jump from the 1,072 units sold in 2022, according to Statista. Sales are expected to rise even further, especially in the peak months from September to December.
