Mercedes-Benz Philippines recently premiered the exciting new Mercedes-Benz GLA compact sport utility vehicle (SUV) via Facebook Live. As the entry-level SUV and the eighth new model in the Mercedes-Benz lineup, the GLA utilizes the brand’s Modular Front Architecture (MFA). It combines the best traits of a compact car and an SUV, and embodies the perfect synergy between beauty and functionality, especially in off-road driving, while carrying Mercedes-Benz’ signature SUV design and trailblazing technologies. This second-generation GLA is bound to set the standard in its class as a demonstration of modern luxury while its sharpened SUV character offers not only a commanding view of the road ahead, but also a rewarding view of what’s next.
The GLA 200 AMG Line features an attractive and sporty appearance characterized by its AMG Body Styling that includes a diamond radiator grille with pins in chrome, 19-inch five twin-spoke light-alloy wheels, black roof liner and polished aluminum roof rails. Muscular shoulders characterize the side and rear views of this luxury compact SUV. With a height of 1,611 millimeters (1,616 mm with roof rails), the new GLA is 100 mm taller than the previous model to provide more interior headroom and promote a feeling of spaciousness.
The driver and the front passenger sit higher and more upright like in a typical SUV while enjoying the spacious interior and comfortable seats. The driver grips a multifunction sports steering wheel in Nappa leather and faces the Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) multimedia system that comes with 7-inch instrument and media display. The MBUX, which has its own intelligent voice assistant that is activated with the phrase “Hey Mercedes”, features smartphone connectivity, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and navigation. The GLA’s comprehensive touch operation concept, which is the combination of a touchscreen, touchpad on the center console, and touch control buttons in the steering wheel, offer intuitive operating experience and less driver distraction.
The new GLA provides not only more space for the passengers, but also more room for their belongings. The rear seat features an individually-folding 40:20:40 split backrest that manages space and cargo loading while allowing more configurable seating positions. The luggage compartment height is adjustable in 2 stages with a continuous luggage compartment floor console while the low boot sill promotes loading convenience and ease.
Mercedes-Benz engineers endowed the GLA with handling that allows it to be agile and easy to maneuver, and a turbocharged powerplant to make it quick on its feet. Under the hood of the GLA 200 AMG Line is a turbocharged 1.3-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 163 horsepower and 250 Nm of torque. A 7G dual-clutch automatic transmission transfers power to the front wheels, while the Dynamic Select console control offers a range of performance profiles, including ”Eco”, “Comfort”, “Sport”, and “Individual” settings. To save on fuel and reduce emissions, the GLA is equipped with an Eco Start/Stop system that automatically shuts off the engine when it’s at a stoplight or idling.
The new GLA offers increased safety with its Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Drive driving assistance system, where the German automaker takes an important step towards accident-free driving. The system allows the driver to experience a new dimension of safety, convenience and stress relief by being able to react when the driver doesn’t. Active Brake Assist can avoid a collision or reduce its severity by applying autonomous braking in emergency situations while Attention Assist can warn the driver by detecting typical signs of inattentiveness or drowsiness.
The GLA 200 AMG Line is loaded with Light and Sight Package that adds appeal and optimizes visibility with functional lights that enhance comfort and safety. The Parking Package consists of Active Parking Assist with reversing camera makes parking and maneuvering easier while Tire Pressure Loss Warning System monitors the inflation pressure of all four tires while driving. Indeed, the new GLA comes across as a sporty, modern, agile, and practical crossover for the consummate aficionados of the go-anywhere, do-anything sport utility vehicles but in a more compact and stylish package.
