The electric vehicle (EV) wave is sweeping across the Philippines, and the Electric Vehicle Association of the Philippines (EVAP) is thrilled to announce that the country is charging ahead toward a cleaner, smarter, and more sustainable mobility future. The 13th Philippine Electric Vehicle Summit (PEVS) promises to be an unmissable event filled with innovation, industry breakthroughs, and exciting opportunities—bringing together the brightest minds and most dynamic brands in the EV sector.

During the pre-event press briefing held in Bonifacio Global City on August 27th, EVAP President Edmund Araga shared inspiring news: “The EV revolution is here, and it’s gaining momentum every day. With supportive government policies, the unpredictable fuel prices pushing consumers toward greener options, and new players entering the market, there has never been a better time to go electric.”

Sales Surge: EVs Are Taking Over the Roads!

The growth is phenomenal. In 2024, sales of four-wheeled EVs nearly tripled, reaching 3,880 units—a staggering 277.5% increase from just 1,028 units in 2023, according to data from the Department of Energy (DOE) and EVAP. Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) now make up about 75% of this market, with hybrids (HEVs) at 23%, and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) at 2%.

And it’s not just cars—sales of two- and three-wheeled EVs exploded by 25,156%, soaring to 43,441 units in 2024 from only 172 in 2023! Nearly 93% of these are two-wheeled EVs (Category L2), with a smaller but growing segment of lower-powered bikes and three-wheeled EVs.

Charging Forward: A Growing Network of Power

This skyrocketing demand is fueling an aggressive infrastructure rollout. The Comprehensive Roadmap for the Electric Vehicle Industry (CREVI) aims to deploy 7,300 EV charging stations nationwide by 2028, up from about 300 in 2023 and nearly 1,000 installed so far this year. Industry leaders are confident these targets are achievable, especially with policies supporting rapid expansion.

Long-term plans aim for 20,400 charging stations by 2040, supporting an EV fleet projected to reach at least 2.5 million vehicles. Today, most stations are in Metro Manila, with malls like SM Supermalls leading the way—hosting 69 stations—followed by Ayala Malls, Megaworld Lifestyle Malls, and Robinsons Malls. Outside Metro Manila, stations are sprouting in Cebu, Davao, and other key cities, making EV charging more accessible than ever.

A Bright Future: Innovation and Industry Growth

The government is backing this momentum. In September 2024, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. inaugurated the country’s first lithium battery factory in Tarlac—the StB Giga Factory Inc.—producing advanced lithium iron phosphate batteries used in renewable energy and EVs. When operating at full capacity by 2030, it will power up to 18,000 EVs annually, positioning the Philippines as a regional leader in clean energy storage.

Further fueling growth, DTI has proposed the Electric Vehicle Incentive Strategy (EVIS), which could generate ?11.4 trillion in economic activity and create up to 680,000 jobs in EV manufacturing, battery production, charging station installation, and maintenance. This initiative continues to build on the momentum of the Electric Vehicle Development Act (EVIDA) passed in 2022.
