Honda Reaches 500 Million Units in Cumulative Global Motorcycle Production Honda has achieved a significant milestone, with its cumulative global production of engine and motor-powered motorcycles reaching 500 million units. This achievement comes 76 years after Honda began mass production of motorcycles in 1949 with the Dream D-Type. Since its founding in 1948, Honda has been committed to developing products and services that meet customer needs worldwide, guided by the belief that “the purpose of technology is to make people’s lives easier.” Honda started mass-producing motorcycles at its first overseas facility in Belgium in 1963, and has since expanded globally following its principle of “producing locally where there is demand.” The company reached notable milestones: 100 million units in 1997, 200 million in 2008, and 300 million in 2014. In 2018, Honda’s annual motorcycle production surpassed 20 million units for the first time, and by 2019, cumulative global production hit 400 million units. Although the COVID-19 pandemic caused a temporary decline in 2020, global demand has steadily recovered to pre-pandemic levels. Looking ahead, Honda positioned 2024 as its “first year of global expansion” for electric-powered two-wheelers, launching new models to diversify its product lineup. Today, Honda offers a wide range of motorcycles—from economical commuters to larger displacement bikes for leisure—and electric models. The company maintains an annual production capacity of over 20 million units across 23 countries and regions, with operations at 37 production facilities, serving customers through a network of more than 30,000 Honda dealers worldwide. Honda remains dedicated to strengthening its motorcycle business by providing innovative products and services, expanding the joy and freedom of mobility to more people, building an efficient business structure, and working toward carbon neutrality through electrification. Toshihiro Mibe, President and Representative Executive Officer of Honda Motor Co., Ltd., stated: “For Honda, the motorcycle business is our founder’s legacy and remains at the core of our company. We have earned the trust of our customers through our diverse range of products and services, reaching the milestone of 500 million units produced globally. I would like to thank our customers and all stakeholders involved—from development to production, sales, and service. Honda will continue to challenge itself to expand the joy of mobility worldwide.” 2025-05-24 Shawie Dizon
